A tour bus scheduled to transport 55 passengers from Flushing Meadows to the Mohegan Sun Casino overturned on the Connecticut Turnpike during a snowstorm on Monday, February 8, at approximately 12:30 p.m. The Connecticut State Department of Transportation says that accident happened in the northbound lanes, just past Exit 61.

Numerous Injuries

Emergency personnel took at least 30 injured victims to the Hospital of St. Raphael at Yale-New Haven and Yale-New Haven Hospital, according to CBS 2 News. Medical personnel reported that six people were in critical, but stable, condition. Some passengers reportedly suffered broken bones in the crash. Uninjured passengers were taken to a local warming center.

Governor Comments

After the accident, a casino spokesperson said that other buses were routed back to their points of origin due to the bad weather. In the aftermath of the bus accident, Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy expressed gratitude to first responders, and he expressed support and concern for the injured.

Lane closures on the expressway continued until approximately 6 p.m. on the day of the crash.
