NYC MTA Worker Killed in Fall

NYC MTA Worker Killed in Fall

In Mid-March, a New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority worker, St. Clair Richard Stephens, fell about 20 feet and landed on his head. He fell when a wooden safety railing broke. He was 23-years-old and a track worker. The fall led to his death.

Stephens was standing between two columns when the rail gave way and sent him falling into empty space where he landed on the tracks below. He had only been working at the job for 6 months and was on a crew that was tasked with removing redundant rails and putting them on a work train.

Stephens was working alone when the accident happened. He suffered head trauma and is believed to have still been alive when a Fire Department crew pulled him back onto the platform. Emergency responders worked to save him, but they were unable to do so. He died an hour later.

Questions about whether or not the railing was strong enough to support a person’s weight were raised. This accident is another example of deteriorating structures on the New York City transit system.
