NYC Spinal Cord Injury Lawyers Discuss Treatment Options For Spinal Cord Injuries

spinal cord injuries

Spinal cord injuries can be devastating. Depending on the severity, such trauma can lead to partial or complete paralysis. In the past, it was often fatal. Now, with advances in technology, several treatments can help those suffering from spinal cord injuries improve their quality of life and even regain some level of motor function.

Fusion

Spinal fusion is just what it sounds like – it involves a surgical technique that connects the vertebrae of the spine together. This prevents any further movement and helps to protect the damaged area of the spinal cord. It’s done by placing bone grafts around the spine, which then fuse together through the process of healing. Generally, fusion is used to correct vertebral fractures or instability of the spinal column. Due to the potential difficulty of locating the exact source that may require fusion surgery, this practice is somewhat controversial.

Laminectomy

A more familiar term for a laminectomy is decompression surgery. The procedure creates space in the spinal column by removing the part of the vertebra that covers the spinal canal in order to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. This pressure is often due to a bony overgrowth pressing against the spinal canal. Laminectomies are typically used only after other treatments have failed or in the event of severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Discectomy

A discectomy is somewhat similar in nature to a laminectomy, except that the surgery removes a herniated disc that’s pressing on the spinal cord or nerves. The traditional procedure has since seen advances that allow for effective alternative options such as micro-, laser, or endoscopic discectomy. The newer surgeries are less invasive and often require less recovery time.

Pain Management

Severe pain is common following a spinal cord injury. Sometimes, no matter what procedures are available, the only thing to do is manage the pain. This often involves the use of pain medications, but it may also require medicines to reduce swelling, bed rest, physical therapy, and other forms of rehabilitation.
