Bus Accident Lawyers Discuss Collision Between Tour Bus and Tractor Trailer

A tour bus enroute from Toronto to New York City was involved in a collision with an automobile and a tractor-trailer in upstate New York. According to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department, the crash occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 6.

Tour Bus Strikes Both Car and Semi

Deputies say that the Pine Hills Trailways bus was southbound on Interstate 81 south of Syracuse, just prior to the mishap. The series of events allegedly began when a motorist crashed his car along the freeway. A trucker then pulled his 18-wheeler over so that he could offer assistance. The tour bus subsequently collided with both the car and the semi.

Total of 27 Reported Injured

Neither the occupant of the car nor the trucker were injured. However, 26 of the 52 bus passengers sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff’s office. The injured passengers were transported to a total of four different area hospitals. The bus driver was pinned in the wreckage, and it took rescue personnel two hours to extricate him. He was transported to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he was later reported to be in serious condition.

DWI Citation Follows

The motorist who had crashed his car prior to the subsequent three-vehicle wreck was later cited for driving while intoxicated. The southbound lanes of I-81 were closed to thru traffic until just prior to 5:30 a.m.

Although the investigation into this multi-vehicle crash is in its preliminary stages, the accident does illustrate the complexity often involved in investigating traffic accidents, especially when commercial vehicles are involved.

Those injured in this type of accident may be able to seek redress in the courts if negligence can be reasonably asserted. In some such cases, a trucking firm or bus tour operator may be named as a defendant in civil litigation. Those injured may seek compensation for certain unpaid medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and other potential costs.
