Medical Malpractice Law Firm in NYC Discuss Unauthorized Sterlizations

Medical Malpractice Law Firm in NYC Discuss Unauthorized Sterlizations

We practice in New York, but we pay attention to medical malpractice stories from across the country because we consider it to be part of our duty to stay informed.

That explains how we came across the news of the doctor with a long history of medical malpractice accusations who now stands accused of a horrifying practice – sterilizing female inmates at a state prison for women without proper authorization.

The 69-year-old doctor worked for the prison until 2011 when he “retired.” He was hired as a contract physician immediately after and worked at Valley State until 2012.

Between 2006 and 2010, he performed over 100 tubal ligation surgeries, which render women unable to have children. He did not have proper state authorization to perform these operations, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting.

The investigation also found that the doctor performed some 378 kinds of sterilizations, including hysterectomies and ovary removal, between 2006 and 2012. Once again, he did not have the proper clearance for these kinds of surgeries.

Furthermore, inmates who were treated by this doctor reported that he had some disturbing practices, such as eating or drinking while conducting intimate examinations. Several women also said he did not tell them that the surgeries he performed on them would leave them sterile.

As a medical malpractice lawyer, I find it shocking that a medical professional would take such unwarranted liberties with patients’ bodies. The sense of violation and deprivation that these women must feel is unimaginable.

My job involves helping people who have been wronged by a doctor or hospital seek a measure of justice. If you think you might need help from an attorney on an apparent medical mistake, surgical error or some other medical-related mishap, please contact us for a FREE consultation.
