Outrage After Two Kids Killed in Brooklyn by Vehicle Driver
Two children were killed after a car hit them while they were crossing a street in Brooklyn. This happened in early March of 2018. This accident lead many transit advocates in the area to call for safer streets. They lead a protect outside of a YMCA where Mayor Bill de Blasio often works out.
The two children who were killed were Abigail Blumstein, 4-years-old, and Joshua Lew, 1-year-old. The children were with their mothers when the accident happened. Their mothers are Ruth Ann Blumstein, 34, and Lauren Lew, 33. The accident happened at 12:40 p.m.
The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Dorothy Burn, 44-years-old. She hasn’t been charged yet for the incident. She was driving a Volvo and began inching into the intersection at a red light. She has been cited four times in the past for running red lights. It is reported that she began to speed up as the pedestrians were crossing the street.
The mothers were rushed to the hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
The intersection where the car accident in Brooklyn occurred has been the scene of 10 traffic injuries since the year 2014 and was where one other pedestrian died in 2016.
