Update on the Safety Issues Involved in East River Helicopter Crash
We have reported on a helicopter crash in the East River that led to the deaths of five passengers. Only the pilot of the helicopter survived the crash. The passengers were tightly bound to the aircraft and could not escape as the helicopter was becoming submerged. The helicopter was owned by Liberty Helicopters and was being chartered by FlyNYON.
The flight was meant to be a good time and a chance for passengers to view Manhattan. It is a service that has been offered by FlyNYON for many years.
After the accident, there has been a lawsuit filed by one of the victims. Also, according to the FAA and other investigative professionals, the crash should have been survivable. But, because of safety issues, the passengers had little chance of surviving. The passengers were pinned down by their restraints holding them to the helicopter. The crash has raised many questions.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are still investigating the cause of the crash. Their actions are centered about the chances of survival in a crash like this and if anything can be done to increase the chances of survival if a similar accident were to happen.
