Astoria, NY (July 24, 2026) – A 68-year-old man suffered severe trauma to his head after a moped struck him as he stepped off an MTA bus and the operator fled the scene without stopping, according to the NYPD. The collision happened at about 1:15 a.m. on July 24, 2026, near the intersection of Steinway Street and 30th Avenue in Astoria.
The moped was traveling eastbound on 30th Avenue at the time of the crash, police said. After striking the man, the operator continued eastbound and left the area entirely. EMS transported the victim to Mount Sinai Queens, where he was treated and listed in stable condition.
The NYPD is actively seeking the moped operator. On August 17, 2026, police released photographs of the driver in connection with the incident and are asking anyone with information about his identity or location to call the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
Hit-and-Run Accidents in Astoria, Queens
When a driver flees, the victim is not left without options. New York law provides paths to compensation even when the at-fault party cannot be immediately located.
- Seek follow-up medical care even if the initial treatment at Mount Sinai Queens showed stable results. Head trauma can produce complications in the days following the injury, and thorough documentation from the emergency visit forward is the foundation of any future claim.
- New York’s Motor Vehicle Accident Indemnification Corporation (MVAIC) covers victims of hit-and-run crashes when the responsible driver cannot be identified or located. A police report has been filed in this case, which satisfies one of the core MVAIC requirements. MVAIC claims also carry their own notice deadline: under New York Insurance Law, that window closes 90 days from the date of the accident, which puts the deadline at October 22, 2026. Missing it can bar the claim entirely.
- Even if the moped driver is eventually identified, pursuing a claim under your own uninsured motorist coverage may also be an avenue worth exploring with an attorney.
- Do not provide a recorded statement to any insurance company before consulting an attorney. That includes your own carrier.
- When a pedestrian is struck while exiting an MTA bus, attorneys examine all of the surrounding circumstances: the path and speed of the moped, the position of the bus at the stop, what the area’s traffic and security cameras recorded, and whether any other witnesses were present. Surveillance footage from this block of 30th Avenue can be overwritten within days.
Under New York law, you generally have three years from the date of the crash to file a personal injury claim (CPLR § 214). That standard deadline is July 24, 2029. The MVAIC notice deadline, however, is October 22, 2026, far shorter. An attorney can confirm which filing deadlines apply and what steps remain available to you right now.
