Bronx, NY (July 24, 2026) – A 57-year-old man was critically injured after a Honda SUV struck him while he was riding a bicycle on the City Island Bridge, police said. The crash happened just after 9:15 a.m.
According to police, a 39-year-old woman driving the Honda SUV collided with the cyclist on the bridge. The force of the impact launched the bicycle to the opposite side of the street. Video from the scene showed the SUV’s windshield shattered and a shoe resting on the hood.
The cyclist was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi in critical condition. The driver remained at the scene. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
A crash that puts a cyclist in the intensive care unit and shatters a windshield raises real questions about what happened on that bridge. The first few weeks after an incident like this matter more than most people realize.
Bicycle Accidents in the Bronx, NY
New York law gives cyclists the same right to use the roadway as any other vehicle. When a driver strikes a rider, several factors determine who bears responsibility for the injuries.
- Whether the driver was paying attention to other road users at the time of the crash
- The speed of the SUV at the point of impact, and whether that speed contributed to the severity of the cyclist’s injuries
- Whether the cyclist was traveling in a designated lane or shared road space on the bridge
- Bridge surveillance footage and any nearby cameras that may have captured the collision
New York follows a pure comparative fault standard. A cyclist may still recover compensation even if found partially responsible for the crash, provided the other party shares fault.
Do not accept any settlement from the driver’s insurance company before speaking with an attorney. Early offers are typically far below what a serious injury claim is actually worth.
Under New York law, you generally have three years from the date of the crash to file a personal injury claim (CPLR § 214). This crash occurred on July 24, 2026, making the filing deadline July 24, 2029.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
