NYPD Searching for Driver Who Fatally Struck Cyclist

Bronx, NY (August 18, 2026) – Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a 51-year-old cyclist and crashed into two parked cars on Bruckner Boulevard late on the night of August 18, according to the New York Police Department.

The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. near Longwood Avenue, when the driver of a BMW struck the cyclist and then collided with a parked Lexus RX 350 and a parked Chevy Camaro, police said.

The BMW also struck a Hyundai Sonata driven by a 38-year-old woman, injuring her. She was hospitalized in stable condition, according to police.

The cyclist was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

Police said the driver fled the scene on foot. No arrests have been made, and the driver’s identity is unknown.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Fatal Hit-and-Run in the Bronx, New York

When a driver flees after a fatal crash, the family does not have to wait for an arrest to start protecting its rights.

  • Who may be liable: the fleeing driver, once identified, and potentially the vehicle’s registered owner if it was not the driver
  • What investigators examine: Bruckner Boulevard traffic and business camera footage, debris and paint transfer left at the scene, and repair-shop reports for a damaged BMW matching the description
  • Even when the at-fault driver has not been identified, a claim may be available under the victim’s own uninsured motorist coverage
  • A wrongful death claim can pursue compensation for lost future income, funeral and burial expenses, and the loss of the guidance and companionship the victim provided
  • Striking three separate vehicles, two parked and one occupied, before fleeing on foot points to a driver who lost control of the vehicle, a fact investigators will weigh alongside speed and road conditions

A Bronx wrongful death lawyer can help a family start gathering evidence right away, before it disappears, and can coordinate with investigators without the family having to manage that process themselves while grieving. Missing the MVAIC notice window can close off one of the family’s clearest paths to compensation before the driver is ever found.
