Six Hurt, Including Children, as Car Hits Pedestrians

Bushwick, NY (October 29, 2026) – Six people, including children, were hurt on the afternoon of October 29 when a car went onto a sidewalk, police and the FDNY said. The crash happened just before 4 p.m. at Knickerbocker Avenue and Bleecker Street, where families had gathered for a trunk-or-treat event.

According to the FDNY, the driver struck multiple pedestrians and a parked, unoccupied non-FDNY ambulance. Police said a 56-year-old man was driving a black sedan, and a 46-year-old woman was in the passenger seat.

The FDNY reported six patients, and all were in stable condition. Law enforcement sources said they were taken to nearby hospitals and all were expected to survive.

Law enforcement sources also said a person was taken into custody at the scene. Police said charges against the driver were pending, and officials have not said what caused the crash.

The trunk-or-treat event was scheduled to run until 5 p.m. but ended early because of the crash.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Key Legal Points After a Pedestrian Crash in Bushwick, NY

The NYC Department of Transportation counted 111 pedestrian deaths citywide in 2025, down 9% from 122 in 2024. Anyone hurt in a pedestrian crash like this one has several legal points to understand early.

  • First steps: Get checked at a hospital even if symptoms seem minor, and ask police for the crash report number.
  • Evidence: Photograph injuries and the scene, keep damaged clothing, and ask nearby businesses to save camera video before it is overwritten.
  • Who may be liable: The driver and the car’s owner, plus anyone else the investigation shows contributed to the crash.
  • Criminal charges: A civil injury claim moves separately from any criminal case against the driver, so pending charges do not delay it.
  • Insurance that may apply: No-fault benefits cover medical bills and lost earnings, and written notice is due within 30 days, by November 28, 2026.
  • If fault is shared: CPLR § 1411(b) bars recovery when the injured person’s fault equals or exceeds the combined fault of the defendants.
  • Deadline: CPLR § 214 sets a three-year filing deadline of October 29, 2029, and a child’s own claim is generally extended under CPLR § 208.
