East Patchogue, NY – Jesse Mangan, 18, Seriously Injured by Vehicle While Changing Tire on Sunrise Highway

Jesse Mangan, 18, Seriously Injured

East Patchogue, NY (August 7, 2026) – Jesse Mangan, 18, of Mastic, sustained serious injuries after being struck by a westbound vehicle while changing a tire on the shoulder of Sunrise Highway, Suffolk County Police confirmed.

The crash occurred at 7:14 a.m. on August 7. Suffolk County Police say Tyrell Lansworth, 35, of Shirley, was driving a 2020 Hyundai Elantra westbound on Sunrise Highway when the vehicle left the travel lanes and struck Mangan on the shoulder. Lansworth was not injured.

Mangan was transported to NYU Langone-Suffolk in Patchogue with serious injuries. Suffolk County Police impounded both the Hyundai and Mangan’s vehicle for a safety check. Fifth Squad detectives are conducting the investigation and are asking anyone with information to contact the squad at 631-854-8552.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Pedestrian Accidents on Long Island Highways

Under New York law, a motorist standing outside their vehicle on the shoulder of a road has the same legal standing as a pedestrian. A passing driver carries the duty to maintain lane control and travel at a speed that allows them to avoid obstacles or stopped vehicles on the shoulder. Sunrise Highway is a busy state route through Suffolk County, and traffic traveling at highway speed poses serious risk to anyone performing roadside repairs.

After a serious highway shoulder injury, these steps apply:

  • See a doctor today, even if the injuries feel manageable at first. Internal damage from blunt impact can take several days to surface, and a gap between the crash and treatment creates problems for a later claim
  • Do not give a recorded statement to any insurance company before consulting an attorney. Adjusters are trained to ask questions that shape the record early
  • Preserve every piece of documentation from the scene: photographs, witness contact information, any communications from insurance companies
  • Do not accept any initial settlement offer before speaking with an attorney. Opening offers rarely account for long-term medical care or lost income, especially for someone still early in their working life

What attorneys and investigators examine in this type of crash includes the Hyundai’s event data recorder, traffic and surveillance cameras along Sunrise Highway, dashcam footage from nearby vehicles, road markings on the shoulder, and visibility conditions at 7:14 a.m. on that stretch of road.

New York applies a pure comparative fault standard. Even if some portion of fault is attributed to the injured party, a claim is not barred. The recovery is reduced by that percentage, not eliminated.

This crash occurred on August 7, 2026. Under New York law, a personal injury claim must be filed within three years of the date of injury (CPLR ยง 214). That puts the filing deadline at August 7, 2029. Certain evidence, including digital camera footage and vehicle data, has a limited retention window. Reaching out to an attorney early preserves that evidence before it disappears.
