East Village, NY (September 18, 2026) – A 15-year-old girl was killed and a 16-year-old girl was hospitalized after a truck struck the e-bike they were riding at East 14th Street and 1st Avenue, according to the New York Police Department.
The crash happened around 9 p.m. on September 18, police said. The truck was traveling westbound on 14th Street and making a right turn onto 1st Avenue when it struck the two teens, according to police.
Police identified the girl who died as Daria Serkov, 15. Both teens were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where Serkov was pronounced dead. The second victim, 16, was last listed in stable condition.
The e-bike was crushed under the truck’s wheels in the collision. The 57-year-old driver of the commercial truck stopped at the scene and cooperated with police, according to surveillance video reviewed by investigators.
Witnesses at the intersection said afterward that a driver in a tall truck may have had a hard time seeing cyclists positioned on the vehicle’s right side as it turned. 14th Street has no dedicated bike lane at that intersection, leaving cyclists to share the roadway with buses and turning trucks.
Police say both teens may have been riding on the same e-bike at the time of the crash. Citi Bike, which operates the bike-share network in partnership with Lyft, said it is cooperating with the investigation and offered condolences to Serkov’s family.
