Harlem, NY – 13-Year-Old Boy Killed in Electric Scooter Crash on West 112th Street

13-Year-Old Boy Killed in Electric Scooter Crash

Harlem, NY (June 18, 2026) – Around 8:46 p.m., a 13-year-old boy was fatally injured when an electric scooter he was riding with a 14-year-old passenger collided with a left-turning Chevrolet Tahoe on West 112th Street, according to the NYPD.

Police say the two boys were traveling westbound on West 112th Street when the scooter collided head-on with a 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by a 63-year-old man. The Tahoe driver had been making a left turn from Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard onto West 112th Street at the time of the collision.

The 13-year-old sustained a head injury and was transported to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The 14-year-old suffered a leg injury and was taken to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition. The Tahoe driver stayed at the scene. No charges have been filed. The NYPD investigation is ongoing.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Two families are facing something no parent can prepare for โ€” one grieving a child who did not come home, and one watching a teenager recover. Neither should be left to navigate what comes next alone.

What to Do After a Fatal Crash in New York

Under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law ยง 1141, a driver executing a left turn must yield to oncoming traffic. When a left-turning vehicle is involved in a fatal collision, investigators examine the timing of the turn, traffic signal phases, the driver’s sight lines, and whether adequate space existed to complete the turn safely. These findings carry weight in a civil case regardless of what the criminal investigation produces.

New York follows a pure comparative fault standard. The family may still pursue a wrongful death claim even if investigators later conclude that fault was shared. Each party’s degree of responsibility affects the amount that can be recovered โ€” it does not automatically bar a claim from being filed.

  • Preserve the scooter and any of the riders’ personal belongings exactly as they are. Do not allow either to be repaired, discarded, or moved without first consulting an attorney.
  • Do not give any statement to an insurance company for either vehicle. Adjusters typically contact families within days of a fatal crash, often before the family has had time to process what happened.
  • Traffic and intersection cameras, and nearby business security footage, are routinely overwritten within 30 days. A preservation letter from an attorney stops that from happening.
  • A wrongful death claim must be filed within two years of the date of death โ€” the deadline for this crash is June 18, 2028.
  • A personal injury claim for the surviving teen must generally be filed within three years under CPLR ยง 214 โ€” that deadline is June 18, 2029.

A civil claim moves on its own timeline, separate from the NYPD investigation. A family does not need to wait for the investigation to close or for charges to be filed before speaking with an attorney.
