Harlem, NY (September 3, 2026) – Three people were injured in a crash involving a police vehicle in Manhattan on the morning of September 3, according to the NYPD.
The crash happened at 8 a.m. near West 124th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard.
Police say two NYPD officers suffered moderate injuries. Both were transported to a local hospital by EMS.
A civilian suffered minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital, according to police.
The NYPD has not said what caused the crash. No information has been released about the second vehicle, whether the police vehicle was responding to a call, or whether anyone has been cited. No other information was immediately available.

Crashes Involving Police and City Vehicles in Manhattan, New York
A crash involving an NYPD vehicle runs on two separate clocks, and the shorter one is easy to miss. Which clock applies depends on who you are claiming against.
A claim against the City of New York requires a written notice of claim served within 90 days of the crash (General Municipal Law § 50-e). For a September 3, 2026 collision, that deadline is December 2, 2026. The lawsuit itself must then be started within one year and 90 days, by December 2, 2027 (General Municipal Law § 50-i). Missing the notice deadline usually ends the claim, no matter how strong the evidence is.
A claim against a private driver follows the ordinary rule. Under New York law, you generally have three years from the date of the crash to file a personal injury claim (CPLR § 214). Here that is September 3, 2029.
Fault in these cases turns on what the police vehicle was actually doing. Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1104 lets the driver of an authorized emergency vehicle set aside certain traffic rules during an emergency operation. When an officer causes a crash while exercising one of those specific privileges, liability requires proof of reckless disregard for the safety of others. That is a far higher bar than ordinary carelessness.
Outside those privileged acts, an officer is judged by the same ordinary negligence standard as any other driver. New York’s highest court settled that point in 2011. The NYPD has not said whether the vehicle in this crash was in emergency operation, so neither standard can be assumed yet.
Shared fault also carries more weight than it did a few months ago. CPLR § 1411(b) took effect on May 26, 2026 and applies to motor vehicle injury actions covered by New York’s no-fault law. An injured person whose share of fault is greater than the combined fault of everyone they sue now recovers nothing. At half or less, damages are reduced by that share, the way they always were.

Injured officers have a separate path. An officer hurt on duty may be able to pursue a negligent private driver alongside job-related benefits. Courts have also held that the reckless disregard standard does not apply when the emergency vehicle operator is the one bringing the claim.
