Manhattan, NY – 51-Year-Old Woman on E-Bike Killed in Dump Truck Hit-and-Run on West 34th Street

51-Year-Old Woman on E-Bike

Manhattan, NY (September 28, 2026) – A 51-year-old woman riding an e-bike was killed at 10:51 a.m. on West 34th Street in Midtown, the New York City Police Department said. Police said a dump truck driver struck her near the Macy’s in Herald Square and did not stay at the scene.

According to preliminary information from police, the woman and the truck driver were both traveling west on West 34th Street toward Seventh Avenue. The crash happened at 151 West 34th Street. Emergency medical crews pronounced her dead at the scene. Police later said she suffered severe head trauma. She was riding a JOCO e-bike.

Police said the dump truck continued driving west on West 34th Street. A dump truck of interest was later located at Fifth Avenue and West 35th Street, and police spoke with the driver. No arrests have been made, and the NYPD said the investigation remains ongoing. West 34th Street between Seventh Avenue and Broadway was closed to traffic during the investigation.

This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.

Fatal Hit-and-Run in Manhattan, NY

A hit-and-run death can involve more than one responsible party. Attorneys and investigators look at several things.

  • Who may be liable: the driver, the company that owns or operates the truck, and any party that maintained or loaded it
  • What investigators examine: the truck’s safety equipment, its maintenance and inspection records, GPS and camera data, and the driver’s route and work logs
  • What evidence carries the claim: street and building camera footage, which is often overwritten within days
  • What coverage may apply: the truck’s commercial insurance first, and other coverage if it is disputed or unavailable

A wrongful death claim can seek recovery for funeral costs, lost income, and the loss of a loved one’s support and guidance. A criminal investigation does not stop a family from pursuing a civil claim.

Under New York law, wrongful death claims must generally be filed within two years of the date of death (EPTL § 5-4.1). This death occurred on September 28, 2026, which puts the deadline at September 28, 2028.

Fault has not been determined. Any fault question will turn on what the investigation finds, and a driver who leaves the scene does not make that question simpler for a family to answer alone.
