Midtown Manhattan, NY (September 9, 2026) – Shortly before 3 a.m. on September 9, a 27-year-old woman riding as a passenger in a Tesla died after the car crashed on East 42nd Street near Madison Avenue, the NYPD said. The driver, also a 27-year-old woman, was taken into custody, and charges were pending, police said.
According to the NYPD, a gray 2024 Tesla Model Y was traveling eastbound on East 42nd Street when it struck a sidewalk shed, a bus stop, and a mailbox near the intersection with Madison Avenue. The Tesla came to a stop near Second Avenue, investigators said.
Both the driver and the passenger were taken to Bellevue Hospital. The passenger was pronounced dead there, police said. The driver was reported to be in stable condition.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Police have not released the names of the driver or the passenger.
