Queens, NY (October 21, 2026) – A 21-year-old NYPD recruit was killed when his motorcycle crashed on the Jackie Robinson Parkway in Queens, according to police. It happened at about 6 a.m. on October 21.
Police said the rider was heading north on the parkway when he struck a guardrail while getting on the ramp to the Van Wyck Expressway. Medics took him to Jamaica Hospital, but he could not be saved.
Officials said he was off duty and on his way to the NYPD Police Academy in Queens. Police said the motorcycle was badly damaged. His name was not immediately released.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
Key Legal Points After a Motorcycle Crash in Queens, NY
NYC DOT reported 57 traffic deaths in Queens in 2025, down from 74 in 2024, and said deaths among motorcycle users fell 32% citywide. A single-vehicle crash can still support a claim, and the evidence that explains it can disappear within days.
- First steps: Ask for the crash report and the contact for the investigating unit. Ask that the motorcycle not be released or salvaged yet. Route insurance calls to one person or to counsel.
- What investigators examine: Police have not said what caused the crash. They may look at the road surface, the guardrail and ramp, signage, lighting, the motorcycle’s condition and the weather.
- Who may be liable: Depending on those findings, a vehicle maker, a maintenance contractor, another driver or the agency responsible for the road.
- If fault is shared: Since May 26, 2026, CPLR § 1411(b) bars recovery in motor vehicle claims only when the injured person’s fault exceeds the defendants’ combined fault.
- Government notice: If a city or state road condition played a part, New York requires a notice of claim within 90 days (Gen. Mun. Law § 50-e), by January 19, 2027.
- Family claims: A wrongful death claim must be filed within two years of the death (EPTL § 5-4.1), by October 21, 2028. The estate may also bring a separate survival claim.
