Staten Island, NY (September 5, 2026) – A motorcycle and a sedan collided head-on on Richmond Hill Road near Edinboro Road on September 5, 2026, police said. The rider, Nicholas Valero, 28, of New Dorp Beach, was thrown from his motorcycle and killed.
Valero was riding a 2004 Harley-Davidson north on Richmond Hill Road when he failed to navigate the roadway and veered into the path of an oncoming 2021 Hyundai Elantra, according to police. The crash happened near LaTourette Golf Course. Police said Valero lived about two-and-a-half miles from the crash site.
The driver of the Hyundai, a 53-year-old man, remained at the scene, police said. He has not faced any immediate charges.
Fatal crashes in the city are investigated by the NYPD Highway Patrol Collision Investigation Squad. That review was still open as of September 8.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Staten Island, New York
When a motorcyclist dies in a collision with a car, the first police account is not the last word. In New York, fault is measured in percentages, not as a single verdict.
- Pure comparative fault applies. New York lets a family recover even when the rider shares a large portion of the blame. The recovery is reduced by the rider’s share, not eliminated (CPLR § 1411).
- The investigation is still open. The Collision Investigation Squad reconstructs the scene, calculates speeds, and canvasses for camera footage. Its findings can shift the picture the first report painted.
- Who may share responsibility: the other driver, if speed, lane position, or reaction time played a role; the vehicle or parts manufacturer, if a mechanical failure surfaces; or a road authority, if the design or condition of the curve contributed.
- What attorneys examine: the reconstruction report, both vehicles’ physical damage, the Hyundai’s event data recorder, skid and gouge marks, sight lines through the curve, and any prior crash history at that location.
A wrongful death claim in New York can cover funeral costs, lost financial support, and the value of the guidance a parent or partner would have provided (EPTL § 5-4.3). A separate claim covers the pain the rider experienced before death.
Wrongful death claims must be filed within two years of the date of death. For a September 5, 2026 crash, that deadline is September 5, 2028. If a city or state road agency is ever implicated in the condition of Richmond Hill Road, a notice of claim is required within 90 days, by December 4, 2026 (Gen. Mun. Law § 50-e). Missing that notice usually ends that part of the claim permanently.

A 28-year-old son, brother, or partner leaving on a Saturday ride and not coming home is a grief that does not follow a schedule. Nothing about the days ahead should be rushed, and nothing you read about the crash should be accepted as final until the investigation is done.
Our New York motorcycle accident lawyers have spent more than 25 years representing riders and their families across all five boroughs, including in head-on crashes where the first police report pointed at the rider and the reconstruction later told a different story. That work has produced a $2,000,000 wrongful death result and a $69,225,000 auto accident jury verdict.
The Hyundai’s onboard data, the physical evidence on the roadway, and any dashcam or doorbell footage from homes along Richmond Hill Road are the pieces that decide these cases. Camera systems overwrite footage within days, and vehicles are repaired or released soon after, so a Staten Island motorcycle crash attorney should be preserving that record while the Collision Investigation Squad is still working.
There is no cost to speak with us, and we are paid only if we recover for your family. Our car accident attorneys in New York handle the insurance side too, so you are not fielding calls from the other driver’s carrier while you are planning a funeral.
