Washington Heights, NY (October 6, 2026) – A wrong-way driver traveling against traffic on the Henry Hudson Parkway caused a fiery head-on crash near Exit 13 for West 158th Street at about 1:30 a.m. on October 6, trapping a motorist inside a burning car against a divider, according to the FDNY and a bystander who helped with the rescue.
The impact set the struck vehicle on fire and pressed it against a highway divider, leaving the driver unable to get out. James O’Connell, 60, a former medic who was passing by, and an officer from the NYPD’s 33rd Precinct climbed the divider together, broke the car window, cut through the airbag, and forced the door open to pull the driver free.
The driver who was struck survived but was left with fractured vertebrae in the neck and spine, internal bleeding, a collapsed lung, a broken hip, a broken leg, and cuts to the face, according to an account provided to the Post. Surgery was ahead. O’Connell was also taken to the hospital with a broken hand from smashing the window.
The FDNY confirmed that two civilians were transported to NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and that two officers were taken to Harlem Hospital. Conditions were not provided. The wrong-way driver was found on the ground after the crash but was not reported to have sustained serious injuries. No charges have been announced, and the investigation is ongoing.
This is a developing story. Details may change as the investigation continues.
Next Steps After a Wrong-Way Car Crash on the Henry Hudson Parkway
NYC DOT reported 87 traffic fatalities across New York City in the first half of 2025, a 32 percent decline from 128 in the same period of 2024, according to the agency’s Vision Zero data. Wrong-way crashes produce some of the most severe injuries in the city, and catastrophic injuries like those reported here trigger multiple legal timelines that begin running from day one.
- Build the medical record from the start. Fractured vertebrae, internal bleeding, a collapsed lung, and broken bones require extended treatment and rehabilitation. Every surgery, follow-up visit, prescription, and missed workday is part of the damages in a personal injury claim. Have a family member keep a detailed log from the moment care begins, and request written reports from every treating physician.
- File the no-fault application immediately. New York requires written notice of the crash to your own insurer within 30 days (Insurance Law Article 51), covering initial medical costs while the liability claim proceeds. This crash happened on October 6, 2026; the no-fault notice deadline is November 5, 2026. Missing it can limit access to no-fault benefits even when the other driver is clearly at fault.
- Preserve the dashcam footage and all other evidence. Footage of the crash already exists and has been described to the media. That footage and any additional camera coverage along the Henry Hudson Parkway should be preserved immediately, since footage is routinely overwritten within days. The FDNY and NYPD incident reports should also be obtained as soon as possible.
- Understand the liability picture. Driving the wrong way on a divided highway is negligence under New York law. The wrong-way driver bears responsibility for the crash. If that driver carries no insurance or is underinsured, the victim’s own uninsured motorist coverage may apply. Do not sign any release or give any recorded statement to any insurer before consulting an attorney.
- File before the deadline. New York gives most injured parties three years from the crash date to bring a personal injury claim (CPLR § 214). For this crash, that deadline is October 6, 2029. Retaining counsel while recovering is the safest way to protect the claim, preserve evidence, and respond if the other insurer moves quickly.
