LIRR Safety Plan Fails Preliminary Tests
The Long Island Rail Road has been putting into place a $1 billion safety system. This system is designed to prevent accidents and save people’s lives. It has been reported that the system has failed its initials tests.
MTA officials have said that the program, called Positive Train Control, has been tested 31 times since February. They have said the software is being tested in the factory as well as on the Port Washington Branch.
The role of the Positive Train Control plan is to bring the train to a stop automatically if it violates a stop signal. Of these tests, the system has worked 13 times but failed 16 times.
“Our system is significantly more complicated than anybody else’s system, specifically more so than the Amtrak system for which the PTC was designed,” MTA board member Mitch Pally said.
Investigators are saying that the PTC could have stopped many recent train accidents that resulted in fatalities including one at a Metro-North train derailment that caused the deaths of four people.
More testing and research is being conducted to get the safety measure right.
If you’ve lost a loved one in a train accident that was caused because necessary safety measures were not being taken, you could seek compensation for the loss by filing a wrongful death claim. For help with a wrongful death claim in New York, call Frekhtman & Associates today at (212) 222-1111.
