Surprise Crane Inspections by DOB
In New York City, high winds are not uncommon. Across the area, construction crews are required to ensure that huge cranes are secured properly. The Department of buildings was making surprise inspections last week to see if construction companies were in compliance with these regulations. They went to a construction site in Brooklyn where a site had to be shut down because of a glitch on a device that measured wind speed on the crane. DOB inspector Michael Linton said, “(The device) must be operational before they resume activity.” In 2016, a crane came crashing down on a windy morning and killed a passerby. Since then, all big cranes must now have wind measuring devices to tell the operator what the wind speeds are in real time. Firefighters Save Five People from Queens Fire
Firefighters face difficult conditions while fighting a fire in Queens. A fire started inside a Queens home on Sunday morning. The blaze trapped a grandmother and her granddaughter. The only way they could get out was through a small window located in the attic. The FDNY responded to the fire. Two firefighters pulled the woman to safety through the tiny window. The stairs in the house were blocked by flames and smoke. The woman acknowledges that she would have died if the firefighters hadn’t saved her, and she said that they also saved the life of her granddaughter. The granddaughter was seen being taken to the hospital in an ambulance where she was treated for smoke inhalation. The girl’s father and grandfather also sustained minor injuries, and one firefighter receives medical attention for minor injuries. Update: One dead and four NYC Firefighters Hurt in Trump Tower Fire
This story is an update on a story we reported on earlier this week. This last weekend firefighters responded to a fire at Trump Tower in Manhattan. The president tweeted about the fire and commended the firefighters who were at the scene. Firefighters responded Saturday evening to the fire that claimed the death of one man. The victim was Todd Brassner, a 67-year-old, who lived in the apartment. He was taken to a hospital where he died a short time later. The investigation is still going on. We have also learned that four firefighters were injured while fighting the fire which was blazing on the 50th floor. Two of these firefighters were burned. The injuries were not life-threatening, New York City Fire Department officials said. Over 200 firefighters and emergency responders were called to the scene. Update: NY Bus Crash was an ‘Avoidable Accident’
This story is an update on a story we reported on earlier this week. On April 8, a bus that was transporting high school students crashed into an overpass. The bus was taking 38 students and 5 chaperones from JFK airport. The bus crashed into an overpass between exits 18 and 19 on the Southern State Parkway outside of Lakeview on Sunday night. All of the people on board were taken to a hospital, and two people were seriously injured. All of the people on board are expected to survive. Investigators are working to figure out who was at fault. Senator Schumer has said that this is not a new problem in reference to vehicles crashing into overpasses. Firefighters Pull a Body from a Burning Bronx Home, Cops Believe Fire was Suspicious
Fire officials have pulled a body that was inside a Bronx home that was on fire. This happened on Monday. Fire police have said they think the fire is suspicious. Firefighters rushed to the home that was located on Freeman Street in Morrisania. They found that flames had completely engulfed the first floor of this three-story house. The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Russell Henry. Firefighters said they rushed to the Freeman Street home at 11:30 at night. Update: Bus Driver Using Noncommercial GPS When Crash Happened
This update is on a story reported on earlier about a bus crash. The crash led to injury to high school students who were on the bus returning from a spring break trip to Europe. The bus was carrying thirty-eight students and five chaperones; many of the students were from Huntington High School. The bus crashed into a Southern State Parkway overpass on Sunday night. At least two people were seriously injured, and many more sustained minor to moderate injuries, according to State Police. Police have also reported that the driver of the bus was using a “noncommercial vehicle GPS device” when the crash occurred. The police have also said that there was no indication that any braking or stopping occurred to try and avoid the crash. The driver is said to be very remorseful, and, so far, no charges have been filed against him. He did not have any
