Update: Hit-and-Run Kills Cyclist in Bronx

A hit-and-run driver who was in a box truck hit and killed a bicyclist who was pedaling next to the vehicle. This happened on Monday In the Bronx. The white box truck was going south on Webster Avenue near the Cross Bronx Expressway in the Tremont area. This occurred on Monday at 10:40. The driver of the truck was trying to make a right turn to get on the ramp to the expressway. As he turned, he hit the cyclist and knocked the man onto the road. NYPD Bus Plan to Clear Congestion
The NYPD has a plan to clear congestion in the bus lane. MTA members say they are unveiling a Bus Action Plan. The plan is calling for onboard cameras to help keep the lanes clear. This plan is being put in place to improve MTA bus service. The city needs to improve enforcement of bus lanes according to the MTA board members at a meeting on Monday. The president of NYC transit, Andy Byford, unveiled a bus action plan to improve service. This plan is being met with praise from board members as well as transit advocates. Update: Bronx Fire Destroys 7 Businesses
This story is being updated from yesterday when we initially reported on it. A large blaze in the Bronx took out several businesses. This happened on Tuesday morning, and the information comes from the FDNY. There were no injuries reported. The fire started at around 5:30 in the morning inside 316 E. 194th Street in the Fordham Manor part of the Bronx. The fire grew quickly. It started as a two-alarm fire but after just fifteen minutes it was a five-alarm fire. Firefighters are reported to have come across heavy fire and smoke conditions. The fire was impacting all seven stores in the building when the firefighters got to the scene. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control at about 9:20. LIRR Safety Plan Fails Preliminary Tests
The Long Island Rail Road has been putting into place a $1 billion safety system. This system is designed to prevent accidents and save people’s lives. It has been reported that the system has failed its initials tests. MTA officials have said that the program, called Positive Train Control, has been tested 31 times since February. They have said the software is being tested in the factory as well as on the Port Washington Branch. The role of the Positive Train Control plan is to bring the train to a stop automatically if it violates a stop signal. Of these tests, the system has worked 13 times but failed 16 times. “Our system is significantly more complicated than anybody else’s system, specifically more so than the Amtrak system for which the PTC was designed,” MTA board member Mitch Pally said.
