Update: Bronx Fire Destroys 7 Businesses
This story is being updated from yesterday when we initially reported on it. A large blaze in the Bronx took out several businesses. This happened on Tuesday morning, and the information comes from the FDNY. There were no injuries reported. The fire started at around 5:30 in the morning inside 316 E. 194th Street in the Fordham Manor part of the Bronx. The fire grew quickly. It started as a two-alarm fire but after just fifteen minutes it was a five-alarm fire. Firefighters are reported to have come across heavy fire and smoke conditions. The fire was impacting all seven stores in the building when the firefighters got to the scene. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control at about 9:20. LIRR Safety Plan Fails Preliminary Tests
The Long Island Rail Road has been putting into place a $1 billion safety system. This system is designed to prevent accidents and save people’s lives. It has been reported that the system has failed its initials tests. MTA officials have said that the program, called Positive Train Control, has been tested 31 times since February. They have said the software is being tested in the factory as well as on the Port Washington Branch. The role of the Positive Train Control plan is to bring the train to a stop automatically if it violates a stop signal. Of these tests, the system has worked 13 times but failed 16 times. “Our system is significantly more complicated than anybody else’s system, specifically more so than the Amtrak system for which the PTC was designed,” MTA board member Mitch Pally said. Driver Collides with Fairville Ambulance
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reported that they are investigating a crash that happened on Austin Road in Arcadia. This accident happened on Saturday at around 7:30 in the morning. According to deputies, a car that was being driven by Donald L. Dewandel, who is 85 and from Newark, was going east on Austin Road. He then hit the back of a Fairville Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance. The ambulance was parked on the road. This collision is still being investigated. According to deputies, Dewandel was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital by a Mercy Flight. He is being treated for injuries but the extent of his injuries is unknown at this time. Shooting Victim Involved in Crash
The Onondaga County 911 Center received many calls about shots being fired in front of 160 Street. These calls came in started at around 10:41 at night. A few minutes later, the 911 callers started reporting that a two-vehicle crash had occurred at 130 Hudson Street. This information comes from dispatchers. Officers arrived at the scene and found a victim who was suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was in one of the cars involved in the crash. An ambulance took the victim to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. This information comes from Sgt. Richard Helterline. The victim was a 20-year-old woman who has since passed away.
