Job accidents are all too common. Safety at work should be a top priority yet accidents still occur and workers unfortunately die. Construction accident lawyer, Frekhtman & Associates, reviewed recent construction accident statistics.

EHS Today indicates that 57% of construction worker fatalities are caused by 4 types of accidents. Those accidents are:

  • Falls
  • Being stuck between two objects
  • Being hit by an object
  • Electrocutions

Dubbed the “Fatal Four,” these accidents claim the lives of hundreds of workers each year. Of the four, falls are the highest cause of death at 36%

Other statistics of interest include:

  • Almost 20% of all work-related deaths occur in the construction industry.
  • The majority of construction deaths are in speciality trades such as foundation, concrete, and structures.
  • In 2012, 775 construction workers died on the job.
  • New York State was in the top ten states for construction deaths in 2012. Texas had the most at over 100 deaths.
  • New York State is one of the top five states for number of construction workers.

Seeing these statistics is alarming and leads to the question of how and why these accident occur. Let’s look at some common causes of construction accidents.

  • Inadequate training of construction employee.
  • Company and/or employee disregarding a known safety regulation.
  • Failure to properly maintain and repair equipment.
  • Weather conditions (strong winds).
  • Improper setup and/or operation of equipment.
  • Overloading a crane or other construction equipment.
  • Improper construction of a scaffold (such as failure to use guard rails).
  • Moving a scaffold without removing all construction tools causing a falling object to injure a worker.
